Jazz Globus 2009

Jazz Globus 2009Vladimir Mak

Sixth differences from previous Festival - two. First, statistical, in that almost every concert was sold-out festival, the second - has risen sharply artistic level of performances. About them - more.

Like previous festivals, Sixth Jazz-Globe ", was held in Jerusalem for eight days, at which stage Hall" Harmony "(in the past - Jerusalem Cultural Center) made 21 of which have played more than 120 musicians. Like the previous, the current held in late November - early December (from 25.11 to 2.12 in 2009). Sixth differences from previous Festival - two. First, statistical, in that almost every concert was sold-out festival, the second - has risen sharply artistic level of performances. About them - more.
By tradition, the festival opened its permanent leader Slava Ganelin. At this time, in ensemble with Esti Keinan-Ofri - singer, dancer, composer, one of the most striking and original contemporary musicians. Esti was born in Italy, Israel has become a professional dancer (she was a soloist of the famous ensemble "Bat Dor"), then began singing and composing music, she studied in New York and in Italy, Luciano Berio - the famous composer wrote for Esti composition, the discharge of with the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado. In 1992, Esti soloed along with Placido Domingo in the premiere of the oratorio Noam Sheriff, "The Passion of Spain", devoted to 500 anniversary of the expulsion of Jews from Spain. The performance was in Toledo, played the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta ... Record could be extended, but today is not the performance of music written speech. In the early 90's told friends about Esti Ganelina gave listen to the recording, after which, she says: "I knew immediately that this is mine." In 1998, they were the first time, a year later released their first CD in 2003 -- second. In Jerusalem at the festival Esty and Slava met after a pause, the size of a few years, for which, in my opinion, yearned for each other. Speeches Ganelina and his comrades are always interesting, but not always on the scene there is harmony, not always the ideal partners to understand each other and draws the audience into their world. November 25, 2009 all took place. Was the highest point of art - magic, unity, numbness of the public, not waited for with impatience codes, to applause, drowning out the sounds of the past, but waking up after a few seconds after the last sound. Refine speech is impossible, we can only invite readers not to miss performances of these musicians.
The second part of the first day was devoted to the chief guest of the festival Alexey A. Kuznetsov. Russian Language publishes a detailed report man, who said last year's 50 th anniversary of jazz activity, it was not necessary, but jazz fans, do not speak the "great and powerful", and listened with his childhood best American musicians (who play regularly in Israel), Kuznetsov was interesting the records, was screened in jazz broadcasts on Israeli radio on the eve of the festival. When Alexei preceded the play Russian comments from the audience heard the translation requirements. Kuznetsov like the audience. Not all modern music can create and execute as Ganelin, but from the less talented modernists audience was tired and was pleased with the honest, old-class jazz. Kuznetsov played his plays - "Alyosha", "Elena and Margarita", "Basman Street Blues", "mechanical toys and jazz classics, and all sounded bright, warm and qualitatively. Accompanied "our" - Shimon Lipkovich pianist, bassist and drummer Valery Lipets Eugene Maistrovsky, but at the end of the program came another guest - trumpeter Igor Shirokov. Drinks party looked paler than others, but the wine is not personally a pianist, but not quite correct ensemble solo guitar and solo piano. Affected little time allotted for rehearsal. But the lack of decisive was not, the audience demanded encore Kuznetsova, got it and sold out in true jazz mood.

The second day was, for technical reasons, is overloaded (performed four ensemble), but so successful that by midnight, Hall remained almost as full as at seven o'clock in the evening. Quintet opened the program "Blue Bird", headed by the veteran Soviet jazz Michael Cullen. Michael 45 years ago opened a Moscow jazz cafe, and now heads the group, named for the cafe, which became Russian jazz legend. One of the architects of legend was a major Russian jazz writer Vasily Aksenov, whose writings were always present theme of «Cam to Me, My Melancholy Baby» (and one of the best books of it was "In Search of a melancholy baby"),. Aksenov recently passed away, his memory Kullu quintet played this theme, heard the first Soviet jazzmen in the American film "The fate of the soldier in America." All performances "Blue Bird" was painted in tones of 60-ies. In the center - not an American, but the Soviet jazz classic. For most listeners were pleasant revelations "When technology is not enough" Bakholdina and foxtrot Polonsky "May Blossom". Unlike past years, Michael has collected the composition, capable of not only play a jam-seshn, but also to assemble at the rehearsal. The program was interesting not only for the episodes, but fascinating as a whole, and participants quintet - the pianist, virtuoso brass, trumpet, and Gennady Litvak saxophonist Dmitriy Shurin, an experienced drummer Glory Kupchik and magnificent young bass Konstantin Èidel'kind (the only team that does not have the experience of Soviet jazz ) - were good not only in bright solo, but also in full swing quality tutti. The culmination of speech has been the emergence of Alexei Kuznetsov. On that day, November 26, 70 years old younger brother of Michael Kullu, Vladimir, also a famous jazzman, who lives today in Moscow. In 1965, the 24-year-old Lesha Vladimir Kuznetsov in the ensemble Kullu first appeared on the scene of the Moscow Jazz Festival and played the solo in "Evening Song" Solovyov-Sedoy. And the Jerusalem scene sounded favorite childhood tune. Some just do not sing: "Look, Leningrad. I'll sing ...», others, hear the theme for the first time, amazed at her beauty.
Michael Agre - musician, which combines quality, almost incompatible: a passion for new music and experiment with first-class ownership of the piano and love and deep knowledge of classical, jazz and academic. The fourth festival Agre first appeared on stage with their own comprehension of Bach's music. It helps academic musicians, cellist and bassist. This year, the experiment continued, «Jerusalem Art Ensemble» is composed of 5 persons: besides Agre and cellist of the last of Alexander Sinel'nikova, took the stage composer, and multi-bendlider "Bob" Yurochkin, to limit its participation in the group playing the violin (Bob - violinist with higher education), one of the leading Israeli jazz double bass Dmitry Grodsky (as in the past, "Classic", played viola in the Israel Philharmonic), and drummer Yoav Lahovitsky, who recently returned to Israel from Holland, where he received higher education in percussion. There were minor prelude to the second volume of the WTC (Preludes and Fugues for the Well-Tempered Clavier) and re majeure aria for strings by Bach and "Reminiscences" very Agre the music of Bach. Arrangements were by the spirit of jazz, but do not fit into the frame style: avant-garde, almost atonal introduction to pure classical cello solo (Sinelnikov - one of the leading Israeli cellists), swing fragments of building reminiscent of transcriptions of Luss, but played brighter, sharper, and closer to the original than the French pianist has made a career in adzhazirovannom performance opuses Bach. Foreign multi-style uniting logic and inspired creative vision. Music is not an eclectic look, performance Agre quintet became one of the brightest at the festival.
However, at this festival there were many outstanding performances. Trio «Promenade» consists of an acoustic guitarist Eugene hacks, and two multimuzykantov (sorry for the repetition of the term within a single concert) - Gershon Vayserfirera and Moshe Jankowski. Gershon and Moshe - unusual and talented musicians who have impeccable taste and sense of form and not speculate to the detriment of artistic virtuosity of the result. Gershon - a brilliant performer on the oud, Moshe - a great percussionist, Eugene - deep composer, performer and a real interesting bendlider. In the center of the program - a fantasy on the theme "The Beatles". (In March 1959, at the Liverpool club scene appeared quintet «Silver Beatles», in which McCartney, Lennon and Harrison had already been together. "Organizers of the Jazz-Globus" rightly thought it was the 50 th anniversary of the greatest in the history of music ensembles and offered to mark the festival participants . Many have responded ...) The music «Promenade» - a combination of jazz and various folk intonations and rhythms. In the finale - way to the scene Kuznetsova and bass Dima Grodskogo and magnificent «Softly», reminded trio GROMIN - Kuznetsov - Isplatovsky, with the unique addition of percussion and scat Moshe Jankowski, a 70 th in Moscow and could not be.
Completed the evening of another guitarist. «My Favorite Blues» - the so-called program of Roman Alexeev, which opened on the theme of Ernst Gold from the movie "Exodus". Music excellent, well-known issue, but the jazz treatment to her pleasantly surprised. All performance sextet Alexeyev was hot, fun and quality. Softly and gently sang several songs Ella Alekseeva, whose place in my father's group is much more justified than the presence of many children and wives in various well-known ensembles. Transformed from the music of Bach - Agre in hard bop Yoav Lahovitsky, intelligently decorated music virtuoso passages for soprano saxophone Dima Shurin (who played on the same evening in the "Bluebird" on viola), also from "The Blue Bird" harmoniously joined in the "Favorite blues' bassist Kostya Eidel'kind Finally, the novel itself, in recent years vacillated between the Gypsy-swing, Balkan music and the accompaniment of songs and romances hot and started playing jazz virtuoso 70-ies. Sounded warm and masterly. One man dropped out of the ensemble. Pianist Tamir Miller - a good musician, but not enough for a charismatic ensemble with a lead guitar. Alekseev has fallen victim to the desire for the ideal and, by limiting itself for provisional and stylish, is not limited to ensemble. It was sad to look at the pianist who has nothing to do on stage. But the drawback was the only one. The program was exciting, the musicians struck up the audience, despite the fact that it was already the fourth hour of the concert. Again, were the Beatles, was the blues Montgomery, and, in the final - again out Alexei Kuznetsov. First, the blues, even at a furious pace to the very Kuznetsova, then, to rapturous applause, «Take a Train A» and embrace guitarists of different generations ...

The third festival day is traditionally dedicated to the Big Bend. Children's Orchestra Eugene Klyaiman disappointed - the program almost never refreshed, many children, instead of working on the sound and phrase, carried away by external effects - for example, the ability to play a few notes on 2 saxophones. Soloists aged 13-14 years acted to put it mildly vulgar. We had to explain to girls that the jazz festival - no festivities. The only member of the orchestra, intuitively understands jazz and really it plays - a 13-year-old pianist Moshe Almakias, which, I hope we will hear in the future. Second was made by the big-band «Spectrum» from Bat Yam, headed by Gennady Litvak. Long known as a good trumpet player, Gene showed himself a real boss of the orchestra - grammotnym arranger and conductor of the classroom. The orchestra sounded bright and clean, great soloist vocalist Benny Herzen, ended up going on stage Igor Shirokov and Alexei Kuznetsov and joint execution of several standards.

The fourth day of the festival opened a dedication to Roman Kunsmanu. Almost forgotten in his homeland, he is revered in Israel, one of the major jazz figures. Kunsman began to play in Tel Aviv the next day after his arrival in Israel, and his first partner was the drummer Harel Kaminski. They created an ensemble «Platina» in which more than 20 years, has trumped the lot of musicians. After 7 years after the death of Roman Kaminski at the idea of «Platina. New Generation », in which a new generation of musicians, led by the veteran, performs works Kunsman. New generation - is Robert Anchipolovsky saxophonist, pianist Leonid Detselman and bass Dmitry Grodsky presented above. Kunsman was not just cool saxophonist and flautist, and not only a gifted composer. He was a bright and extraordinary personality that combines the deep faith and passion for jazz, love for Coltrane and Schoenberg, to Dolphy and Stockhausen, the saxophone and flute ... There were a about 45 minutes, four songs that captured the room completely and not allow anyone to relax for a second. Anchipolovsky that tend to imitate their teacher Phil Woods, was unrecognizable and played badly and nervously. Detselman, Grodsky and Kaminski were brilliant rhythm trio, and released on the final blues Shirokov, who played with Kunsmanom still in the 60 years, gracefully complement the ensemble.
The second number was the author's project Nahum Pereferkovicha - one of the masters of the Israeli jazz. Nahum, once played in the "platinum", not without pleasure, said his pupil Lenya Detselmana. In his draft, however, played above submitted by Eugene Maistrovsky (drums), the young musicians Adam Ben Ezra (bass) and Arnon times (tenor saxophone), and one of the patriarchs of the Israeli jazz Mamelo Gaetanopulos (trumpet). Sam bendlider and author of tracks played on the piano. Interesting, well rehearsed play, striking solos - will highlight times Maistrovskaya, not very expressive was Mamelo. "Dedication to John Zorn" was the culmination of the program, the author has demonstrated not only the possession of a piano virtuoso, but a confident game on alto saxophone. (Pereferkovich - a professional string player, in the 70 years was concertmaster of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra viola, the clarinet and saxophone, he learned to play in the USSR, the army, and had not forgotten how to this day, despite the fact that in the morning until the evening playing the piano and teaches students that ...). In the final, came to the stage Nahum's wife - a famous Israeli jazz singer Ricky Manor. The clear response would have been a pair of standards and solos in the style of Billie Holiday, that Ricky does exclusively. But the public was offered yet another experiment - 2 blues on texts from the Song of Songs, from which she was not thrilled. To me, this work seemed interesting, but in general the whole project, called the author of "Dzhazeyada" (translated from the English-Aramaic "Holiday Jazz") - one of the most interesting at the festival.
The final day of Moscow Quartet Round Band ". Alexey Kruglov - not only an excellent saxophone player, but any music enthusiast - and free improvisation, and folk and jazz music making, and various jazz styles. The enthusiasm at a time when opera singers sing in stadiums, academic pianists pretend play jazz and jazz musicians involved in party work and figure skating - an anomalous phenomenon. Alex is still young - many would say, but in 30 years and a musician and a person has already been formed and, I believe, will not change fundamentally. Round Band "in Jerusalem, consisting of very Kruglov, Renata Gataulina - a pianist with an excellent academic school, Dmitry Tolochkova - virtuoso bass and Oleg Shuntsova - technically impeccable, with a rich arsenal of techniques and a sensitive musical nuances of any drummer. The program consisted of works from almost Kruglov. Sounded only one piece of Eric Dolphy with a pause - as if the musicians had left, nedorepetirovali, after which all returned to the subject and successfully completed the composition. Humor was not understood - part of the audience did not understand in Russian, and the whole audience is not accustomed to "skit" on the jazz scene. This was the only miscalculation. Other weaknesses in the program are debatable: I personally think that Alex too keen on demonstration of the possibilities, playing simultaneously on 2 or even 3 saxophones, and it is worth recalling one of his idols, Herman Lukyanov, always use exotic instruments, but do so for music purposes. I wanted less aggression in the music and more cantilenas, but the carping of those - at Hamburg score, when the stellar performances of American convoys in Eilat, I have quibbles, no less. I shall especially note performance of the play "Love," which the quartet dedicated memory Lyubov Polishchuk - the day of the concert, November 28, is 3 years from the time as a great actress passed away.

Fifth day of the "Jazz Globe Award - 2009" opened quintet Yuval Tabachnik. All musicians - born in Israel, the two - a leader, a baritone saxophonist and bass Ivry Borukhov, after studying in Tel Aviv, have completed education in America ( «Manhattan School of Music», and «Barkley»), 20-year-old drummer Amir Bressler has served in the army, pianist and vibraphonist Naysberg Eric Gill Sorin - graduates of the Jerusalem Academy. All - world-class musicians, standing in one row with the Israelis, which entered the jazz world's elite - Eli Didzhibri, bassist Avishai Cohen and the Cohen family - brass.
The quartet "El Camino", performing cover versions of popular songs, prepared for the festival program, with a focus on the anniversary of the Beatles. Favorite songs were filled with timid departures from the originals that are not well suited to the festival scene. The original composition of the group leader Yuri dining room was interesting, the final curtsy - «Love for Sale» - the audience delighted and, indeed, and the song "The Beatles". It was pleasant relaxation, though not quite jazz.
Completed the evening of the project «Bird with Strings» Robert Anchipolovskogo, remember that Charlie Parker (among other things, the teacher, Robert Woods, Phil is married to one of the wives Parker) has recorded three records with a string orchestra. At stage left, Robert (in the hat 50-ies), bassist Dima Grodsky, drummer Dor Hershkowitz, a frequent guest of the Israeli pianist from Italy, Tony Panchello and ... string orchestra led by conductor Dudi Sofer! The idea of restoring the old music is laudable, but the restoration - not blind repetition. Parker did not come out with this music at concerts, it was intended for home comfort. People under a gentle-sounding melody in the average rate of talking, sipping whiskey and smoking a cigar (then still in America, smoking). In the hall of the first fifteen minutes all listened with interest, then opened the vibration from the natural desire of contrasts: louder and quieter, faster and more slowly, finally, I wanted a bit of dissonance, it was all too sweet, like mustard or pepper in the music of Parker, who, without contrasts and dissonances is not available! They appeared only at the end of the program, when Robert became the longest solo, when he became a bright solo play Yurochkin Bob, sitting in a string band, when they finally played Panchello, and when we came on stage with Kruglov Shirokov. «Now the Time» was a striking finale, which is heard, alas, only a few dozen people remaining in the hall. Others fled to sleep - to lull them to music, which was designed to lull ...

Sixth day of the festival opened a new quartet of Julia Feldman. Last year, the Jerusalem singer (recently recorded drive in America, together with leading musicians nyuyorkskimi) collected a traditional ensemble with piano, bass and drums. At this time the quartet vocals coupled with guitar, bass and percussion. The program - the original reading of popular songs of the 60's - 80's, among which was a large proportion of songs "Beatles", The problem seemed to be similar to the one that pursued the group "El Camino", but the quartet of Julia Feldman has decided it is not relief, but jazz - a bright and original. Guitarist Steve Paskov - one of the most experienced Israeli jazz musicians. Nearly all of career he played on an electric or semi-acoustic guitar, but here turned to a purely acoustic instrument, which played a subtle and elegant. Gilad Dobretsky - an excellent, resourceful musician with a large collection of tools and good taste. Assaf Hakimi - bass virtuoso (left-handed, like McCartney, but Paul played bass and Asaf - on the bass strings with transposed the contrary) and present the core of the ensemble. Julia sings without any external pressure and the false drive (which some mistake for a real jazz singer when singing - Rossiyskogo member of the Presidential Council for Culture), weaving vocal filigree and lace, along with partners, drawing listeners in an original jazz world. It turns out, do not have a great and powerful voice, we just have to love music in me more than themselves in music.
The main experiment of the Fifth Festival of the alliance was an improviser and strict classic - Ganelina and pianist Irina Berkovich. The main experiment of the Sixth Jazz-Globus "- performing musicians playing Eastern music and participate in the jazz musician. Peretz Eliyahu - composer and performer on the packaging, a native of Dagestan, one of the main figures in Israeli music today. His son Mark played on kemanche, turning it into a tool no less virtuosic than the traditional string and extracting from this kind of monotone instrument rich palette of sounds. Gil Hameiri - native Israeli, the son of immigrants from Yemen. I think he was born percussionist - so expressive sound of his fingers, playing on the Persian, Caucasian and Levantine shock. Music is not popular - piece composed by Peretz Eliyahu and merged name - quote from the final phrase "Song of Songs," in the mountains, fragrant. "Kruglov blended into the east-Jewish trio so organically, that he lives his life in this musical atmosphere. I hope this meeting will not be the only biography of musicians, and the Jerusalem experiment, a new musical concord.
Completed the evening Round Band "with Igor Shirokov. On the eve of the festival in Moscow issued a CD "April in Yaroslavl, which shows the music of Igor. She also was played in Jerusalem, only a broad and Kruglov played not with Denisov and Yudanova, but with Tolochkovym and Shuntsovym. Igor and Alex - musicians of different generations and different fates. The first - a self-taught, has passed through all the joys and sorrows of Soviet jazz, the fates decreed, who has appeared in Europe, but the remainder of the Russian musician (even more Russian than it was in Russia), the second - half its present age, who grew up in a free country and received excellent special education. With this broad and Kruglov play, as they say, a single wave, and they have identical blood types. Composer at the beginning Shirokova brighter - if the program Kruglov me something is missing, then the music Shirokova absolutely did not require external, standard, evergreen additives.
In the penultimate day of the festival concert was not. In a small club "Birman" in the pedestrian zone of Jerusalem musicians and the audience gathered at the jam-seshn. Places in the club sorely lacking, tables carried into the street, which is at 9 o'clock in the evening had already been virtually partitioned. For five guests of the festival (Kuznetsov had already left) added about twenty local musicians. Music was played for about three hours non-stop, then lull, and already after midnight, in a half-empty club, the owner picked up the accordion, Dima Tolochko - double bass, a strange young man - a guitar, and a young waitress sang "girls from Ipanema" ...

The final festival concert was opened by the Jerusalem team "Holy smoke". Having been around for several years and specializing in Irish - the Balkans - Levantine music, she did not offer himself as a participant in the festival, although the virtuosity of each member and drive the whole ensemble more suited to the Jazz-Globus "than some psevdodzhazovye combo. This year, specially for the festival, has been proposed adzhazirovannaya version of "Christmas trees-sticks" with the added two musicians: the violinist Pavel Golenko, performer on the Irish flute and bagpipes Alex Weitz, guitarist Ilya Siltsov (known on many projects, Boris Gummer), bass guitarist Alex Trepakov, drummer and saxophonist Gadi Schoenfeld - Boris Gammer (soprano, tenor, clarinet) and Anatoly Shpiglus (tenor). At the outset all the bands performing this kind of music, are delighted. All very fun, bright and masterly. Then the most annoying. I remember from the middle of the famous orchestra performances Bregovich I waited for something new, but did not wait. "Holy smoke" is not bothered for a second. The program was balanced, rich arsenal of methods of performing each of the musicians is spent carefully and with taste. In the finale the music became a Jewish (or rather, the Balkan-Jewish and Levantine-Jewish), and Gummer, to everyone's delight, showed no jazz, but kleyzmerskuyu virtuosity in the possession of a clarinet, it can compete with the legendary Giora Feydmanu.
Made its debut last year alliance ward «Barkley» Israeli woman Michal Cohen and pianist Simon Lipkovich came on stage with the Moscow rhythm section - and Tolochkovym Shuntsovym. All four from the first notes of feel one organism and not cause the claims in the public neotrepetirovannosti. The program began with poluavangardnoy music, in which buying, frets theme repeated many times in unison with the singer and pianist, and between repetitions each of the quartet soloist. Then sounded the traditional theme of the Yemenite Jews, and its unusual design. Michal demonstrated excellent vocal technique, beautiful, rich in nuances of tone of voice, partners did not accompany the singer, but were with her together. Then - turn to jazz through the "Beatles". «Blackbird» with the "White Album" Michal and Simon played a duet, without rhythm, demonstrating how to make the processing, without damaging the original. Then there were the "Autumn Leaves", is the standard in light of the standard, sung by a very jazzy and very freely, not like a pile of "Autumn leaves", usually falling on the festivals. By the way, at this festival "Leaves" sounded once, and «Summertime» - never.
Completed the festival of "Alliance - 2009" - a free collection of traditional musicians under the direction Ganelina. At this time on stage together Oleg Shuntsov, bassist Victor Fonarev (arriving annually from Washington in the days of the festival), Rinat Gataulin, Slava Ganelin, Alexei Kruglov and Igor Shirokov (listed in order: the rhythm - Keyboards - wind). It would be a deceit to say that all six of hearts immediately huddled in a single meter. Naturally, the first currents, the first musical ideas and suggestions came from Ganelina in five different parties. Initially, most accurately caught them and sent them back to their own drummer, then this game is gradually drawn into it. Braked Gataulin, that eventually, but brighter, who played on the contrast with the rest. Sextet played half an hour - it's too much even for the trio, especially when the musicians every one does not know anything, just something to feel. Nevertheless, by mid-searching and a sense of curiosity among the audience disappeared, leaving only the usual condition of listening to music and dragging it, and not circus act. A few seconds after the applause Ganelin played slow, enveloping everything, march. The other five caught him, and here the band has already been played perfectly and forever. It remains only to regret that the "Alliance" - is unique and next year will be new, "Alliance - 2010".

Finished sixth Jazz-Globus. The festival took place, despite the general crisis and global changes in the nature. Let's hope that no force will prevent the festival in Jerusalem and in the next year ...
